Jay Gelfond and Peter Nystrom Debate: Downtown Revitalization

Jay Gelfond and Peter Nystrom Debate: Downtown Revitalization The candidates for next weeks special Norwich City Council election differed the most on budget priorities during a forum Wednesday night. Veteran Republican Peter Nystrom and unaffiliated political novice Jay Gelfond were hosted at the Salvation Army building by the NAACP and Norwich Bully-Busters, the first and possibly last meeting before Tuesdays election. Most questions related to the budget, education funding and economic development. City Manager Alan Bergrens proposal to flat-fund the Board of Education next year was the source of first disagreement. I am definitely totally against flat funding, Gelfond said, saying he would see where else in the budget they could find money to support the boards increase. Nystrom said he would ask Norwich Free Academy to reconsider the 2.5 percent tuition increase it passed in the winter. Nystrom said his main concern is city jobs and taxes. Going door-to-door, people are very concerned about the mill rate, he said. Nystrom said the councils primary objective this year is averting as many layoffs as possible. Gelfond, whose background includes real estate appraisal, said encouraging home ownership is a key to expanding economic development. He said there is a need to have business in the downtown to counter a large number of social service operations, such as the homeless shelter and the soup kitchen. He said parking must be improved downtown to attract businesses

Ground Views of London England at night. POV walking and driving. Traffic, People, Streets. London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium.[6] London’s ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its square-mile mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, governed by the elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly. London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. It is the world’s largest financial centre alongside New York, has the largest city GDP in Europe and is home to the headquarters of more than 100 of Europe’s 500 largest companies. It has the most international visitors of any city in the world. London Heathrow is the world’s busiest airport by number of international passengers. London’s 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education institutions in Europe. In 2012 London will become the first city to

Death Starry Night – A Mural by 140 Below

Client: Chris & Laura Nelson Green Street New London, CT 06232 140 Below documents the production of their second mural in downtown New London. This piece, after Van Gogh’s famous painting, was selected due to the client’s fondness for this work, then shamefully bastardized to suit 140 Below’s own shameless ends. This mural was finished in one day, thanks to some local artists stopping by and lending us their talent. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. This mural is temporary, as the wall that it is on will be dismantled as part of the building’s renovation. 140 Below understood this and, in the spirit of street art, carried on anyway. The second part of this video will document the dismantling of this mural.
